2019 National Festival of Breads™ Official Rules

A contest for Home BREAD Bakers and Food Bloggers

The Contest entry begins at 12:00 AM Central Standard Time (“CST”) on October 1, 2018, and ends at 11:59:59 PM Central Standard Time (“CST”) on January 22, 2019 (hereinafter, “Contest Entry Period”).

King Arthur Flour, Red Star Yeast and the Kansas Wheat Commission present the 2019 National Festival of Breads™ (“Contest”). Participation in the Contest constitutes full and unconditional agreement to, and acceptance of, these Contest Rules. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. ALL FEDERAL, STATE, LOCAL AND MUNICIPAL RULES APPLY. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.

ELIGIBILTY:

Contest is open to HOME BAKERS and FOOD BLOGGERS 18 years of age or older at the time of contest entry and a legal United States resident residing in one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia. No teams or groups will be permitted.

Home Baker Division:

Individuals who are avid amateur home bread bakers and do not make the major portion of their income by baking bread may enter.

Food Blogger Division:

Individuals who currently maintain an active food blog and include wheat foods and yeast bread recipes as part of their content may enter. Food bloggers who contract with any of the sponsors ARE eligible to participate in the contest, if they do not make the majority of their income from the sponsors.

As part of the entry process, recipes MUST be marked on the entry form which of the two Divisions they are entering, based on qualifications of the Entrant. Determination of a contestant’s status rests solely with the sponsors.

INELIGIBILITY:

  • You have been a finalist in 3 National Festival of Breads™ Contests or won the Champion prize.
  • You or your spouse, parent or child (all regardless of place of residence) or others currently living in your household are employed by King Arthur Flour or Red Star Yeast.
  • You are an employee of any national or state wheat organization, or their associations. Determination of a contestant’s eligibility rests solely with the sponsors.

RECIPE RULES:

This Contest is intended for an original yeast bread recipe (artisan, sourdough, whole grain, savory breads, ethnic, holiday, flatbread, rolls, etc.) developed by the Entrant. “Original” means the Contest recipe has not been previously published in the same or substantially the same form. Finalists will be required to certify the entry is “original.” Each submitted recipe must not infringe the copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity or other intellectual property rights of any person or entity.

Recipe will be disqualified if the type of KING ARTHUR® Flour and RED STAR® Yeast is not stated in the recipe.

Recipe must include at least one ¼ ounce package (2¼ tsp.) RED STAR® Yeast product (Active Dry, Quick-Rise™ or Platinum® Yeast) as a leavening agent. www.redstaryeast.com

Recipe must include KING ARTHUR® unbleached wheat flour (All-Purpose Flour, Bread Flour, Premium 100% Whole Wheat Flour, White Whole Wheat Flour, Self-Rising Flour, Sprouted Wheat Flour or Organic Flours).* www.kingarthurflour.com

*Clarification added 11/27/2018: Recipe must include at least 75% of the flours listed above. Remaining 25% can come from other KING ARTHUR® flours.

A PHOTO must be attached with recipe submission; it may be taken with a phone camera. One photo should show both the whole loaf or roll and a portion sliced so the interior is visible.

Recipe should make one or more loaves OR one dozen or more rolls.

No meat or cheese-filled breads; cheese may be an ingredient in the dough or used as a garnish.

Recipe MUST include complete step-by-step directions, listing each ingredient, including garnishes.

Include the history of your original recipe: why you developed the recipe; family connection; modifications and when it is served. 

Submit recipe in English using either U.S. standardized volume measurements (cup, tablespoon, teaspoon, etc.) and/or weights. For example: 1½ cups (6 3/8 ounces) King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour.

If selected as a NFOB Finalist, recipe must be prepared on June 8, 2019 in seven (7) hours or less. If recipe requires overnight refrigeration, the Finalist will be allowed to prepare the dough the night before.

The Contest entry begins at 12:00 AM Central Standard Time (“CST”) on October 1, 2018 and ends at 11:59:59 PM Central Standard Time (“CST”) on January 22, 2019.

Submit your original recipe and one photo of you bread entry at: www.nationalfestivalofbreads.com. You may enter multiple recipes, however each Entry must be different. You will only be eligible to become a Finalist with one recipe.

RECIPE JUDGING:

By submitting a recipe and photo to the National Festival of Breads™, the Entrant is representing his/her recipe as their original creation. Judges will disqualify previously published recipes, including those published online, from food companies, magazines, cookbooks, blogs, or winners in recipe contests.

Finalists are solely responsible for complying with any applicable copyright restrictions, and the National Festival of Breads™ sponsors, its agencies and the judges assume no obligation in that regard. Sponsors may contact you regarding your submission.

Each eligible Entry will be reviewed by a qualified panel of judges. Selected recipes will be test baked. The Judging Criteria and point system is:

Eating Quality, Flavor, Aroma 50 points
Originality, Artistic Flair, Appearance, Shaping 30 points
Nutritional Value and Healthfulness  10 points
Ease of Preparation and Detailed Instructions 10 points

​PRIZES:

FOUR (4) Finalists in the Home Baker Division and FOUR (4) Finalists in the Food Blogger Division will be selected. Each Finalist will receive a check for $500 and a trip to Manhattan, Kan., to compete on Saturday, June 8, 2019. Trip includes round-trip economy coach air transportation from the major airport nearest finalist’s home to Manhattan (MHK) Airport; hotel accommodations consisting of one (1) single or double occupancy room for three (3) nights at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel & Conference Center; meals, and ground transportation. The approximate retail value of each Finalist package is $1,500. Gratuity and other expenses are the sole responsibility of each Finalist. In addition, the eight (8) Finalists will attend a Wheat Harvest Tour, which includes an educational and interactive visit to a wheat farm and flour mill on Friday, June 7, 2019.

CHAMPION PRIZES:

One (1) Champion will be selected in the Home Baker Division and One (1) Champion will be selected in the Food Blogger Division on Saturday, June 8, 2019 in Manhattan, Kan.

Each Champion Prize includes: tuition (not to exceed $500) to attend a hands-on baking class(es) at a King Arthur Flour Baking School in Norwich, Vermont or Skagit Valley, Washington. Each Champion will also receive a $1,500 check for their travel and lodging expenses. Out of pocket incidentals, including food and leisure activities, are not covered. In addition, each Champion will receive a one-year supply of Red Star® Yeast (valued at $200). Each Champion prize package will not exceed $2,000.

SPONSOR AWARD: $200 CASH

Best Recipe Using Soy Ingredients, i.e. soy flour, soybean oil (also called vegetable oil or soy oil), soynuts, tofu, soymilk, soynut butter, soy yogurt, soy margarine, soy cereal, soy grits or soy cheese. Sponsored by the Kansas Soybean Commission www.kansassoybeans.org

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIAL AWARDS:

Special awards and Honorable Mentions will be recognized from among eligible entries. 

FINALIST INFORMATION:

If your recipe is one of the eight (8) Finalists, you will be notified via phone and/or email on or about April 15, 2019.  All eight (8) finalists MUST agree to participate in the national event from Thursday, June 6, 2019 through Saturday June 8, 2019, in Manhattan, Kan.

Finalists are not allowed to share their recipe on social media, blogs or other media outlets until after June 8, 2019.

Selected Finalists will be required to sign a notarized affidavit verifying the originality, authorship, and ownership of their recipes prior to competing in the National Festival of Breads™, their eligibility and compliance with these Official Rules and a release of King Arthur Flour, Red Star Yeast and the Kansas Wheat Commission, the judges, and their respective directors and employees from all liability, claims, damages, and injuries resulting from the finalists’ participation in the final competition and the acceptance and use of a prize including, without limitation, any personal injury, death, loss or damages of any kind, or claims based on publicity rights, defamation, or invasion of privacy (the “Release”).

Finalists shall return (the “Release”) to the sponsors within fourteen (14) business days of date of personal delivery or date of sender’s postmark. Failure to return (the “Release”) in the time permitted, or return of notification as undeliverable, will result in the Finalist being disqualified and an alternate selected.

Selected Finalists will be required to sign a consent and release (the “Consent”) to grant the National Festival of Breads™ sponsors permission to use said Finalist’s name, photograph and personal information in any media relating to their participation for publicity, promotion, advertising, and other purposes without further notice or additional compensation to promote the Contest or the recipe; and shall further assign to King Arthur Flour, Red Star Yeast and the Kansas Wheat Commission all rights of ownership, including copyright, in any such recipe and return (the “Consent”) within fourteen (14) business days of receipt of notification. Selected Finalists may be required to make themselves available for interviews during the time their recipe is publicized locally or nationally in the media.

All Finalists agree to return any prize received if the representations made herein or in (the “Release”) prove to be untrue and to further indemnify and hold harmless the Kansas Wheat Commission, Red Star Yeast and King Arthur Flour against any and all claims, damages, and expenses, including attorney’s fees incurred as a result of any such misrepresentation.

Selected Finalists may waive to receive a prize. Prizes are non-assignable and non-transferable. No substitutions or case equivalents allowed by winners. Prizes are subject to availability and Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value. The winners are solely responsible for all federal, state, and local taxes and fees associated with the receipt of any prize.

Sponsors will also select one (1) alternate in each Division. If a Finalist becomes unable to compete for any reason on June 8, 2019, the sponsors will attempt to replace that Finalist with an alternate, provided the alternate can comply with the conditions stated above by May 8, 2019. If no alternate can comply by that date, the Finalist will not be replaced.

FINAL COMPETITION:

The (8) Finalists must prepare and follow their submitted recipe at the National Festival of Breads™ on Saturday, June 8, 2019 in Manhattan, Kan. Finalists will prepare their recipe three (3) times at the public event. No ingredient substitutions or changes can be made at the Contest. Finalist will be disqualified and the prize(s) forfeited.

Decisions of the Judges and Sponsors are final in all matters relating to the determination of the Champion awards.

The Sponsors will supply on Saturday, June 8, 2019: electric ovens, KitchenAid mixers, cooking equipment/tools, white glass judging plates, and all ingredients. Sponsors must approve in advance any additional equipment the Finalist wishes to supply.

Finalists must be available for judging, photos, and media interviews.

OTHER TERMS:

Sponsors reserve the right to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or website; violates the Contest Rules; or acts in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner at any time during the final competition, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person. By submitting one or more recipes, each Entrant accepts all Contest Rules and agrees to be bound by the decisions of the Judges and Sponsors, which shall be final.

Each Entrant also agrees that each original recipe and all legal rights and interests in said recipe, including the rights of copyright, become the exclusive property of King Arthur Flour, Red Star Yeast and the Kansas Wheat Commission, which reserve the right to edit, adapt, copyright, publish, transfer, and use any or all Contest entries, without compensation to the Entrant or any third party.

It is expressly understood that Sponsors are under no obligation to the Finalists other than as expressly set forth in these Contest Rules. All Finalists must agree to abide by these Contest Rules, and the decisions of the Sponsors and the Judges, which shall be final in all matters relating to the National Festival of Breads™.

All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of the Contest Rules, or rights of Entrants, shall be governed by and construed in accordance with, the substance laws of the State of Kansas, without regard to conflicts of law principles. The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these rules shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision. In the event that any such provision is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable, these rules shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or unenforceable provision was not contained therein.

The National Festival of Breads™ Sponsors and their agencies are not responsible for any changes or effects caused to the Entrant’s computer system as a result of submitting online entries, or entries that cannot be processed due to telephone, network, electronic, computer hardware/software failure, or technical failures of any kind.

All entries become the physical property of the Sponsors and will not be acknowledged or returned. Nor will any evaluations be sent to Entrants or Finalists.

If for any reason, the Contest is not capable of running as planned by any cause which, in the sole opinion of the Sponsors, Sponsors reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to suspend, modify, or terminate the Contest and determine winners from entries received prior to action taken, or as otherwise deemed fair and equitable by the Sponsors.

Odds of winning depend upon the total number of eligible entries in the Contest.
