2017 National Festival of Breads™ Rules

Entries accepted October 1, 2016, through January 16, 2017.

King Arthur Flour, Red Star Yeast and the Kansas Wheat Commission present the 2017 National Festival of Breads™ (“Contest”). Participation in the Contest constitutes full and unconditional agreement to, and acceptance of, these Official Rules. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. ALL FEDERAL, STATE, LOCAL AND MUNICIPAL RULES APPLY. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.

WHO CAN ENTER
This Contest is open to any AMATEUR YOUTH baker 8 to 17 years of age or AMATEUR ADULT baker 18 years of age or older at time of entry and a legal United States resident residing in one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia. An amateur baker is any person who does not make the major portion of their income by baking.

YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO ENTER IF

  • You or your spouse, parent or child (all regardless of place of residence) or others currently living in your household is employed by one of the sponsors.
  • You are an employee of any national or state wheat industry organization, or their associations; or a member of the immediate family (parent, children, siblings, spouse) or live in the same household as an employee (whether related or not).
  • You are a professional baker or earn a major portion of your income by baking. Determination of a contestant’s professional/amateur status rests solely with the sponsors.

CONTEST RULES

  • This Contest is intended for original bread recipes developed by the entrant. “Original” means the contest recipe has not been previously published in the same or substantially the same form. Finalists will be required to certify the entry is “original.” Each submitted recipe must not infringe the copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity or other intellectual property rights of any person or entity.
  • Recipes must use at least one ¼ ounce package (2¼ tsp.) RED STAR® Yeast (any variety, i.e. Active Dry, Quick-Rise™, Platinum®, or Cake (Fresh) Yeast) as a leavening agent in the Yeast Bread recipe. www.redstaryeast.com

Note: Recipe will be disqualified if the type of RED STAR® Yeast is not specified.

  • Recipes must include KING ARTHUR® unbleached wheat flour (All-Purpose Flour, Bread Flour, Premium 100% Whole Wheat Flour, White Whole Wheat Flour, Self-Rising Flour, Sprouted Wheat Flour or Organic Flours). www.kingarthurflour.com

Note: Recipe will be disqualified if the type of KING ARTHUR® Flour is not stated in the recipe.

  • A PHOTO must be attached with recipe submission. Photo should include the whole loaf of bread with one or two slices cut from the loaf, so the interior can be viewed. Roll pictures should show a whole roll and another roll sliced showing the interior. (A picture taken with a cell phone is acceptable.)
  • Eligible persons can enter as many original recipes in this Contest as they wish. Past National Festival of Breads Champions may not enter, but past finalists may enter the contest.
  • Incomplete recipes will be disqualified. Sufficiently detailed directions must be included. List ingredients in the order of use; mixing, kneading and baking times; water temperature; pan size and preparation (greased or ungreased); mixing method (hand or mixer); shaping instructions (dimensions); and yield.
  • A short history of the recipe (source, modifications, etc.) should be included.
  • Recipes must be submitted in English using standard measurements (no metric).
  • A bread machine may be used for the entire process or to prepare the dough.
  • Adult Category recipes must be prepared the day of the final competition in six (6) hours or less. (If recipe requires overnight refrigeration, the contestant will be allowed to prepare the dough the night before the competition. Dough preparation is limited to 30 minutes.)
  • Please be certain to follow all rules.

ADULT CATEGORIES (18 years of age or older):

Recipe must yield a minimum of one loaf or one dozen rolls.

Holiday Breads: Yeast-raised breads with a national or cultural influence, traditionally baked for holidays and special occasions.

Rolls: Fancy-shaped individual portions made from a yeast-raised lean, savory or sweet dough.

Time-Saving and Simple Breads: Examples of time-saving steps include using a bread machine or food processor to prepare the dough, refrigerated dough, “no-knead”, batter breads, or other time-saving methods for busy bakers.

Whole Grain Breads: Whole grain breads include any breads made with at least 50% whole wheat flour.

YOUTH CATEGORIES (8 to 17 years of age):

Yeast Breads:  Enter your original YEAST BREAD recipe made using Red Star® Yeast as a leavening agent. May include a traditional loaf, rolls, braids, yeasted waffles, creative shapes, etc.

Quick Breads: Enter your original QUICK BREAD (traditional loaf, muffin, waffle, scone, etc.) recipe made with leavening agents such as baking powder and/or baking soda. Also acceptable is the use of King Arthur® Flour Unbleached Self-Rising Flour.

TO ENTER ONLINE

Submit your original BREAD RECIPE and attach a PHOTO using the online entry form at www.nationalfestivalofbreads.com. No entries accepted by postal mail. All online entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. (CT) on January 16, 2017. Entering the same recipe multiple times will NOT increase entrant’s chances of becoming a finalist. Each entrant may enter as many original recipes in this Contest as they wish, but will only be eligible to become a finalist with one recipe. The National Festival of Breads™ sponsors and their agencies are not responsible for any changes or effects caused to the entrant’s computer system as a result of submitting online entries, or entries that cannot be processed due to telephone, network, electronic, computer hardware/software failure, or technical failures of any kind.

All entries become the physical property of the sponsors and will not be acknowledged or returned. Sponsors reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to suspend, modify, or terminate the Contest. Odds of winning depend upon the total number of eligible entries in the contest.

RECIPE JUDGING

By submitting a RECIPE and PHOTO to the National Festival of Breads™, the entrant is representing his/her recipe as original. Judges will disqualify previously published recipes, including those published in any magazine, cookbook, recipe website, or other recipe contest. All finalists are solely responsible for complying with any applicable copyright restrictions, and the National Festival of Breads™ sponsors, its agencies and the judges assume no obligation in that regard. Sponsors may contact you regarding your submission.

Each eligible recipe will be read by a team of food professionals. Selected recipes will be test baked.

The recipe judging criteria is as follows:

Taste, Texture, Tenderness, Appearance, Shaping                                          55 points

Orininality, Artistic Flair                                            25 points

Nutritional Value and Healthfulness         10 points

Ease of Preparation and Practicality             10 points

YOUTH PRIZES:  Cash Awards only.  Youth winners will not compete at the National Festival of Breads™ in Manhattan, Kan.

One (1) YOUTH OVERALL Grand Prize winner will receive a $500 scholarship.

Two (2) YOUTH RUNNER-UP winners will each receive a $250 scholarship.

​ADULT PRIZES:

Eight (8) ADULT finalists will receive a $500 cash award and a trip to Manhattan, Kan., to compete on Saturday, June 17, 2017, for additional cash prizes as outlined below. Trip includes round-trip economy coach air transportation for each finalist from the major airport nearest finalist’s home to Manhattan (MHK) Airport; hotel accommodations consisting of one (1) single or double occupancy room for three (3) nights at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel & Conference Center, Manhattan, Kan.; daily meals, ground transportation; and all applicable taxes associated with hotel, meals, ground and air transportation. The approximate retail value of each finalist package is $1,500. Gratuity and other expenses are the sole responsibility of each finalist. In addition, the eight (8) ADULT finalists will be invited on a Wheat Harvest tour, including visiting a working Kansas wheat farm, flour mill and grain elevator, on Friday, June 16, 2017.

ADULT GRAND PRIZE:
One (1) Grand Prize winner will be selected on Saturday, June 17, 2017 in Manhattan, Kan. The Grand Prize consists of: a $2,000 cash prize, $500 credit (for winner only) towards baking classes at the King Arthur Flour Baking Education Center in Norwich, Vermont and expenses toward travel and lodging (airfare, rental car, and hotel) to and from Vermont up to $1,500. Out of pocket incidentals, including food and leisure activities, are not covered. Receipts for travel and lodging expenses must be submitted to Kansas Wheat by June 30, 2018. In addition, the Grand Prize winner will receive a supply (120 envelopes) of Red Star Yeast. Total prize package not to exceed $4,000 in cash and tuition credit.

IMPORTANT FINALIST INFORMATION

Eight (8) ADULT finalists and YOUTH Winners will be notified on or about April 15, 2017.  All eight (8) ADULT finalists will need to agree to participate in the national event from Thursday, June 15, 2017, through Saturday, June 17, 2017, in Manhattan, Kan. (YOUTH Winners will not participate in the national event.)

Selected ADULT finalists will be required to sign a notarized affidavit verifying the originality, authorship, and ownership of their recipes prior to competing in the National Festival of Breads™, their eligibility and compliance with these Official Rules and a release of King Arthur Flour, Red Star Yeast and the Kansas Wheat Commission, the judges, and their respective directors and employees from all liability, claims, damages, and injuries resulting from the finalists’ participation in the final competition and the acceptance and use of a prize including, without limitation, any personal injury, death, loss or damages of any kind, or claims based on publicity rights, defamation, or invasion of privacy (the “Release”).

Finalists shall return (the “Release”) to the sponsors within fourteen (14) business days of date of personal delivery or date of sender’s postmark. Failure to return (the “Release”) in the time permitted, or return of notification as undeliverable, will result in the entrant being disqualified and an alternate selected.

Selected ADULT finalists will be required to sign a consent and release (the ”Consent”) to grant the National Festival of Breads™ sponsors permission to use said finalist’s name, photograph and personal information in any media relating to their participation for publicity, promotion, advertising, and other purposes without further notice or additional compensation to promote the Contest or the recipe; and shall further assign to King Arthur Flour, Red Star Yeast and the Kansas Wheat Commission all rights of ownership, including copyright, in any such recipe and return (the “Consent”) within fourteen (14) business days of receipt of notification. Selected ADULT and YOUTH finalists may be required to make themselves available for interviews during the time their recipe is publicized locally or nationally in the media.

All finalists agree to return any prize received if the representations made herein or in (the “Release”) prove to be untrue and to further indemnify and hold harmless the Kansas Wheat Commission, Red Star Yeast and King Arthur Flour against any and all claims, damages, and expenses, including attorney’s fees incurred as a result of any such misrepresentation.

Selected finalists may waive to receive a prize.  Prizes are non-assignable and nontransferable. No substitutions or case equivalents allowed by winners.  Prizes are subject to availability and Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value. The winners are solely responsible for all federal, state, and local taxes and fees associated with the receipt of any prize.

Sponsors will also select one (1) ADULT Alternate.  If an adult finalist becomes unable to compete/attend for any reason on June 17, 2017, the sponsors will attempt to replace that finalist with an alternate, provided the alternate can comply with the conditions stated above by May 31, 2017. If no alternate can comply by that date, the finalist will not be replaced.

FINAL COMPETITION

The (8) ADULT finalists must prepare and follow their submitted recipe at the National Festival of Breads™ on Saturday, June 17, 2017 in Manhattan, Kan.  No ingredient substitutions, added decorations or slashes can be added at the contest. Finalist will be disqualified and the cash prize forfeited. The sponsors will supply on Saturday, June 17, 2017: electric ovens, KitchenAid mixers, cooking equipment/tools, white glass judging plates, and all ingredients. Additional equipment needed must be supplied by the contestant and approved by the sponsors in advance.

OTHER TERMS

Sponsors reserve the right to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or website; violates the Official Rules; or acts in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner at any time during the final competition, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person. By submitting one or more recipes, each entrant accepts all Contest rules and agrees to be bound by the decisions of the judges, which shall be final. Each entrant also agrees that each original recipe and all legal rights and interests in said recipe, including the rights of copyright, become the exclusive property of King Arthur Flour, Red Star Yeast and the Kansas Wheat Commission, which reserve the right to edit, adapt, copyright, publish, transfer, and use any or all Contest entries, without compensation to the entrant or any third party.

It is expressly understood that sponsors are under no obligation to the finalists other than as expressly set forth in these Official Rules. All finalists must agree to abide by these Official Rules, and the decisions of the Kansas Wheat Commission and the judges, which shall be final in all matters relating to the National Festival of Breads™.

All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of the official rules, or rights of entrants, shall be governed by and construed in accordance with, the substance laws of the State of Kansas, without regard to conflicts of law principles.  The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these rules shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision.  In the event that any such provision is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable, these rules shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or unenforceable provision was not contained therein.
